As the number of leaking underground fuel tank sites with methyl tertiary butyl ehter (MTBE) contamination continues to grow, there is a need to develop cost-effective solutions for treatment of soil and water contamination. MTBE poses special challenges because of its physicochemical properties, in particular high solubility and low Henry's constant, low affinity for sorption, and very slow rate of microbial degradation. Advanced oxidation processes tend to generate undesirable by-products. Based on laboratory studies with hollow fiber membranes (HFM), a field-scale unit was constructed and tested at a number of sites, to determine the effectiveness of this technology in dealing with MTBE contamination. In addition, to treat the soil contamination, the HFM unit was coupled with a Spray Aeration Vapor Extraction (SAVE) unit, which is based on an internal combustion engine. The engine provides the means to treat soil vapors, as well as organic vapors from the spray aeration and HFM units. The overall treatment objectives of 5μg/l for MTBE and 1 μg/l for benzene were achieved with a treatment train consisting of an ion exchange unit, a spray aeration system, a hollow fiber membrane module and two granular activated carbon (GAC) units, for flowrates ranging from 3.8 to 30 l/min (1 to 8 gal/min). The ion exchange unit sewed to reduce water hardness and avoid scaling in the subsequent treatment units, extending the run-time of the entire system. Overall removal efficiencies for the spray aeration system and hollow fiber membrane module ranged from 85 to over 99 percent. High removal efficiencies (> 97%) were obtained at elevated water temperatures (54°C) or lower flowrates (up to 11 l/min). The GAC units were used only to polish the effluent and meet the discharge requirements. Soil, water, and gas phases are treated with this system. Globalization of trade and travel has facilitated the spread of non-native species across the earth. A proportion of these species become established and cause serious environmental, economic, and human health impacts. These species are referred to as invasive, and are now recognized as one of the major drivers of biodiversity change across the globe. As a long-time centre for trade, Europe has seen the introduction and subsequent establishment of at least several thousand non-native species. These range in taxonomy from viruses and bacteria to fungi, plants, and animals. Although invasive species cause major negative impacts across all regions of Europe, they also offer scientists the opportunity to develop and test theory about how species enter and leave communities, how non-native and native species interact with each other, and how different types of species affect ecosystem functions. For these reasons, there has been recent growth in the field of invasion biology as scientists work to understand the process of invasion, the changes that invasive species cause to their recipient ecosystems, and the ways that the problems of invasive species can be reduced. This review covers the process and drivers of species invasions in Europe, the socio-economic factors that make some regions particularly strongly invaded, and the ecological factors that make some species particularly invasive. We describe the impacts of invasive species in Europe, the difficulties involved in reducing these impacts, and explain the policy options currently being considered. We outline the reasons that invasive species create unique policy challenges, and suggest some rules of thumb for designing and implementing management programs. If new management programs are not enacted in Europe, it is inevitable that more invasive species will arrive, and that the total economic, environmental, and human health impacts from these species will continue to grow. 相似文献

Here, water balance, based on mass conservation, is utilized to systemically develop three levels of composite efficiency indicators for a WRS, which are configurable based on two types of water totals: total inflow and total consumption (outflow that effectively is not available for reuse). The indices characterize hydrology of an area by including in their formulations the flow dynamics at three integrated levels. Furthermore, the usefulness of water is incorporated into the indicators by defining two weights: one for quality, and the other for beneficial attributes of water use. Usefulness Criterion is the product of quality and beneficial weights, emphasizing the equal significance of the two dimensions. Both of these weights depend on the system itself and the priorities of the supervising organization, which also are shaped by the objectives and values of the given society. These concepts lead to the definition of Macro, Meso, and Micro‐Efficiencies, which form a set of integrated indicators that explicitly promotes stakeholder involvement in evaluation and design of WRSs. Macro, Meso, and Micro‐Efficiencies should be maximized for both water totals, which is an integrated prerequisite for sustainability and is less promoted by competing stakeholders. Division of labor in social insects is determinant to their ecological success. Recent models emphasize that division of labor is an emergent property of the interactions among nestmates obeying to simple behavioral rules. However, the role of evolution in shaping these rules has been largely neglected. Here, we investigate a model that integrates the perspectives of self-organization and evolution. Our point of departure is the response threshold model, where we allow thresholds to evolve. We ask whether the thresholds will evolve to a state where division of labor emerges in a form that fits the needs of the colony. We find that division of labor can indeed evolve through the evolutionary branching of thresholds, leading to workers that differ in their tendency to take on a given task. However, the conditions under which division of labor evolves depend on the strength of selection on the two fitness components considered: amount of work performed and on worker distribution over tasks. When selection is strongest on the amount of work performed, division of labor evolves if switching tasks is costly. When selection is strongest on worker distribution, division of labor is less likely to evolve. Furthermore, we show that a biased distribution (like 3:1) of workers over tasks is not easily achievable by a threshold mechanism, even under strong selection. Contrary to expectation, multiple matings of colony foundresses impede the evolution of specialization. Overall, our model sheds light on the importance of considering the interaction between specific mechanisms and ecological requirements to better understand the evolutionary scenarios that lead to division of labor in complex systems. ABSTRACT: On February 12, 1992, a portion of the Ventura River, California, flowed through the Ventura Beach RV Resort which had recently been constructed across a major historically active distributary of the Ventura River delta. State and local land-use planners recognized the flood hazards associated with the site, but decision-makers relied on analytical methods developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and flood-hazard categories developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which did not adequately reflect the mobile nature of the Ventura River channel and distributaries. A better understanding of the historical behavior of the Ventura River could have averted the flood damages experienced in 1992. Low intensity recreational, agricultural, or habitat restoration use of the site would minimize potential flood damages and obviate the need for structural flood protection that would impact the river's natural resources. Continued operation of the recreational vehicle park could result in additional flood damages in the relatively near future; recognizing the limitations of the flood-modeling methodologies used for the Ventura Beach RV Resort could prevent similar miscalculations of flood potential in comparable situations. 相似文献

Over 7,000 lakes around Sudbury, Ontario, Canada were acidified by S deposition associated with emissions from the Sudbury
metal smelters and more distant S sources. Air pollution controls have led to widespread changes in damaged Sudbury lakes,
including increased pH and decreased concentrations of SO4, metals and base cations. While chemical improvements have often been substantial, many lakes are still acidified, although
water quality recovery is continuing. Biological recovery has been observed in some lakes among various groups of organisms
including fish, zooplankton, phytoplankton and zoobenthos. Generally, however, biological recovery is still at an early stage.
Lakes around Sudbury are also showing that the recovery of acid-damaged lakes is closely linked to the effects of other major
environmental stressors such as climate change, base cation depletion and UV-B irradiance. Future studies of the recovery
of acid-damaged lakes around Sudbury, and in other regions, will need to consider the interactions of these and other stressors. 相似文献

Several clones of the American aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) differing in ozone sensitivity were fumigated continuously for 105 days with different ozone concentrations, producing different ozone doses. The suitability of the clones as possible replacements for tobacco as bioindicators in forested areas was tested. The life span of leaves of the ozone-sensitive clones was distinctly reduced by ozone. The difference to controls was significant even in the relatively clean air at Birmensdorf. Growth was diminished, too, but the decrease in height was much less pronounced than that in weight. In sensitive clones an after-effect was detectable, since the weight of new shoots (grown from reserves) decreased with increasing ozone stress in the previous year. Since the tolerant clone grew less, it is-at first sight-of decreased economic interest from the point of view of rapid productivity. In the long run, however, it might be economically interesting because it may be able to maintain productivity (although at a lower level) due to better competitive strength. 相似文献
